The 1st part of the building finished construction in 1915 as a 5 county tuberculosis hospital. The Summit County became the sole owner of the hospital in 1920 after all other counties involved sold their interest. The Sunshine Cottage part of the hospital opened in 1922 for pediatric patients. The Sanitarium as renamed Edwin Shaw Hospital in 1934 for Edwin Copeland Shaw, who was on the Board of Trustees in 1918. Sunshine Cottage was turned over to Children Services in 1947 and was expanded in the 1960s to include Sunshine Village. The Village housed orphans and abused children, it was closed in 1985. Legislation was passed in 1959 that allowed patients with conditions other than tuberculosis to be admitted. Edwin Shaw was expanded several times as more services were offered. The hospital shifted its focus to providing outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation in the mid-1970s. There is a cemetery on site said to hold the remains of over 200 patients. A new facility was open in December 2009 at the former Fallsview Psychiatric Hospital and the Lakemore location was closed.
