On June 3, 1932 a new baseball stadium was built for Columbus’sold minor league team the Red Birds which was a team owned by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Red Bird were top of the league contenders and were very successful during their time in Columbus. They left the city in 1954 and as soon as they left another team took their spot. Harold Cooper was the one responsible for bringing the new team to Columbus just a year later. The team was known as the Columbus Jets and they were affiliated with the Kansas City Athletics, but only for a couple years until they became affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1957 until they left the park in 1970. Baseball wasn’t a thing in Columbus, Ohio until 1976 when Mr. Cooper brought the sport back to the city. The new team in town was the Columbus Clippers who still play in this city to this date. The Clippers were affiliated with the Pirates(1976-1978) at first, then the Yankees (1979-2006) and lastly the Nationals (2007-2008). Over the years they expanded and renovated the stadium introducing the sky boxes and a new press box. The park was officially renamed Cooper Stadium in 1984 in honor of the team’s founder Mr. Cooper. The park was known as a nice park with lots of space for fans, nice outfield, and most of all its lights. Cooper Stadium was the first baseball stadium with lights when it was built. As the years passed Cooper Stadium started to grow old and it was time for a new stadium. The last game played at Cooper Stadium was on September 1, 2008. The team re located just three miles northwest the next season into a new and nicer stadium in the arena district known as Huntington Park. After the Clippers moved Cooper Stadium sat vacant for several years. Demolition began in April 2014 and they started by taking out the first base stands of the stadium, but demolition stopped and they are preserving the stands for a future race track which will be built on the same land as Cooper Stadium once was. More plans about the new racetrack are to come out soon, and Columbus could be a new home for Nascar Races.
